API Reference

Choose the correct server and path

Plan Server API path Authentication Rate limit
Free free.freeipapi.com /api/v1/ None 10 requests per 10 seconds, up to 60 per minute
Paid A regional paid server listed below /api/ API key or whitelisted IP/domain No rate limits

Only the free API uses /api/v1/. Paid API URLs stay on /api/. A paid subscription or API key does not remove limits from requests sent to the free server.

Free Servers

Use https://free.freeipapi.com/api/v1/ for single IP lookups in JSON or XML. No account, API key, or whitelisting is required.

curl https://free.freeipapi.com/api/v1/json/8.8.8.8

The previous /api/json/{ip} and /api/xml/{ip} paths on the free server remain compatible. Use /api/v1/ for new integrations and when updating existing ones.

Paid Servers

Paid plans support single IP lookups, bulk lookups, countries, phone codes, timezones, distance, and languages. Choose a regional server and keep the /api/ path:

Region API base URL
Germany https://de.freeipapi.com/api/
United States https://us.freeipapi.com/api/
Singapore https://sgp.freeipapi.com/api/
Australia https://au.freeipapi.com/api/
curl https://de.freeipapi.com/api/json/8.8.8.8 \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY'

For example, the countries endpoint is https://de.freeipapi.com/api/countries. Paid-only endpoints are not available on the free server.

Authentication for paid plans

An active paid subscription is required. Choose one authentication method:

Method Setup
API key Create a key and send Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. Keep keys in backend code.
Server IP Whitelist your server's public outgoing IP, then make requests from that server without a key.
Website domain Whitelist your website's exact hostname, then make browser requests with that hostname in the Origin header.

All three methods provide paid access without rate limits. For browser integrations, use domain whitelisting rather than exposing an API key.

See Get IP Info for JSON and XML endpoints, and Rate Limit for free-plan limits.
